Caring Hands have organised many sporting and recreational events for beneficiaries who are orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in the local communities. Everyone of our OVC deserves the right to be a child and be able to take part in recreational activities in a safe and secure environment.

Psycho-social care and support services

During 2016 a total of 762 project beneficiaries received psycho-social support services.
This included counselling and spiritual support, life skills training for OVC, peer support group activities as well as sports, recreation, music, dance and drama activities.

We started a Peer Support Group through one of the programs to make it easier for our OVC to access friendly support. Every Saturday we opened the doors and let the children come and play in a safe environment that was supervised. They played games, sports, have a resource area where the children can read or study and there was also a traditional dancing group where the children learnt about their cultural music and dancing. The children were also able to find out more about important issues such as their sexual and reproductive health, children rights and responsibilities and the importance of education.

We held a Sports Tournament at Nelson Mandela Stadium (Namboole) in the summertime where more than 350 children split into teams and take part in football and netball playoffs. This event promoted useful life skills for the children developing their skills in teamwork, confidence and physical skills such as techniques and strategy for the games. The tournament ran over 3 weeks and on the last day medals and trophy’s were presented to the winning teams and coaches.
