At Caring Hands we have actively encouraged the promotion of green economy and explaining the benefits to our beneficiaries. We carried out' Life Skills' training workshops for adults and some of our older orphans and vulnerable children over the years which has encouraged them to make positive changes in their lives whilst making them more aware of sustainable ways to become environmentally friendly.

Some of our courses have included – Urban Farming, Recycled handcrafts and Briquettes.

Urban Farming – We held workshops to show our beneficiaries how they could turn the smallest piece of land into a garden to grow their own fruit and vegetables. They were shown how to grow many different varieties of produce – this course helped them to earn a living to support their families as well as teaching them new skills.

Recycled Handcrafts – We initially trained over 50 women in making beads from paper. We wanted to empower them with these new skills that were both environmentally friendly and a sustainable way for them to earn a living. The women created the beads and many other products from recycled paper, including cards and bags, using the beads as well. We also taught women how to make hand woven baskets using banana tree fibre and raffia fibre. These materials can be locally sourced at low or no cost and they create beautiful products.

Briquettes – Coal is used in stoves for cooking but the fumes given off when it's being burned, especially in confined spaces, can have a harmful affect on people’s health. We held a course for our beneficiaries to show them how to make safer briquettes using a mixture of coal dust and cassava flour. These briquettes keeps the heat in longer meaning that you use less which reduces the amount of carbon monoxide that’s being released when they are being used.
