We have promoted education to all of our beneficiaries through the different projects we are involved in from young to old. Previously we have been able to support families with their children’s school fees including scholastic materials. Our amazing social workers and teachers also ran Adult Literacy classes at the training facility and carried out school visits to check on the progress of the children. The resource room at Caring Hands is filled with informational posters, leaflets and books for educational and recreational reading.

Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) Classes

Our Functional Adult Literacy classes allow people to learn how to read, write and speak English. When Caring Hands first started in the community they noticed that a lot of the beneficiaries they visited would use a thumbprint as a signature when signing for anything. This lead to the classes being started and they have grown over the years. The teachers worked with each of our beneficiaries to make the learning relevant to their everyday life helping them to develop and retain their knowledge. The classes were run from beginner to advanced level.

During 2016 we selected members of the community who had the most difficulties with reading and writing and where their education level was at primary and below. They were enrolled at the start of the year and then we had another intake later in the year when we took on more community members referred by Revelation Life, our neighbouring NGO. Our teachers ran activities including income generating activities, home economics, health care activities, personal financial management and tried to make the classes as relevant to the students every day life as possible.
